If it isn't stamped as food-safe, it could leach something or be made of recycled plastics which could have been in contact with anything
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Pop to wikos and have a look for the food safe stamp on theirs. I'm sure they're almost identical

No it won't
it might not effect the initial flavour of your beer to much but the chemicals that release into it will over time effect you.
Sorry to sound like a merchant of doom.

Try ampulla.co.uk they have large food safe containers. Actually, they have pretty much everything, looking at their website.

I'm dubious about using any plastic that has colouring chemicals in it.

I've just taken delivery of one of these. Its in great nick but has an overwhelming aroma of spicy mango chutney! God knows how I'm going to get rid of the smell before using it.

clean em and air em for a few weeks in a breezy spot a bit of summer UV wont hurt the barrel too much and will help im sure.

i ended up airing for about a month giving em a 2nd deep clean (soak with oxi) and upturned so the thread could soak too with a weight on the boyant top/bottom ;) after about 2 weeks expecting em pong free - no 2 more weeks and another soak and i was satisfied..

my theory is the smell is concentrated in the lid/barrel threads perhaps due to bits of chutney getting pressed into the thread with use?? so i give the threads the garden hose jet treatment, a few bricks on the lid stop u playing water frisbie and attacking the barrel when full also helps.. and nif you have a lid seal pull that as one persistent b*gger i had had festering lumps behind the seal.

the smell does go..

poundstretcher are good also. They where selling kitchen bins (you know the type) for £7 and they're all foodsafe! Who'd have thought!
