fermentation problems (i think)

Post by fitzy85 » Fri Sep 12, 2014 5:37 pm

Hi, sorry to keep asking questions but trying to learn by doing.

I started my wilkos golden ale kit 18 days ago, today is the first time i have opened up the fv as i now have some videne no rinse :).

My cameras flash dident work so i have had to edit the photo to make it brighter, but it looks like yeast is still on the top floating with the krausen Image

I used my sanitised turkey baster to take a sample and the sg is 1012

I am confused with my reading does this mean it is at 1% abv? or do i need to stir / swil the mixture to get the yeast mixed in / wait a few more weeks by doing nothing.

Thanks

whats your original gravity

kits are usually around
1.04
so if so

Original Gravity (OG): 1.04
Final Gravity (FG): 1.012
Alcohol By Volume:
3.68%

or was your starting gravity 18 days ago 1.012 ?

1.062 doesn't sound right, unless you brewed it really short or added extra fermentables.

A 2 can kit to 23L is usually 1.038 - 1.040.

Cheers

I have found the formula for working out the percentage, with me being new to this, all i can think is the brew was above 20c when i took the first reading and not made an adjustment

You will find plenty of abv calcs online which will help u out all u need are ur gravity readings

if its 1.012 after 18 days and stays constant stop looking at it and rack off to bottles or a keg

U will be suprised after conditioned a while

cheers

It says 1% because that's how much alcohol you'd have if you started at that gravity. In your case it's the finishing gravity.

All looks fine to me. You can go ahead and bottle. If your starting gravity was 1062, give it at last a month in the bottle - strong beers take a lot longer to condition. In my opinion, weaker beers are better: they mature faster, taste more like professionally made beer, and you can drink more :).
