Newcy brown clone in kit anyone?
Newcy brown clone in kit anyone?
I would love to find the nearest kit to this beer for my dad who's favourite drink this is. Or a kit with tweaks.
Thanks

I made this kit a while back, muntons bke, 200gms soft brown sugar brewed to 40 pints. its been in the barrel about 2mths or so now, i tried it after it was 3 wks old & it was horrid but since then its matured into a very nice drink. my daughter just bought me a few bottles of Newcastle brown ale so i cracked one open had a smell then a mouthfull, i thought aye aye this smells & tastes just like my coopers bitter, so i went & poured a glass of coopers & tried them side by side & sure enough same colour, smell & taste the daughter thought so too, so i'll be brewing this again..

So, Vern; Ye saying Coopers Bitter comes out like " Newcastle Brown Ale " ? Am I reading this right?
Fascinating. I seem to remember NBA was quite the " Jack Daniels " of beers, back then. Frankly? So long since I tasted one; I'm buggered if I'd remember what it was really like!
A Bitter, tasting like a 'Brown Ale', sounds like a bit of a paradox. But, then: I don't seem to remember NBA ever tasting much like any other 'Brown Ale' I ever tasted anyway.
F**k me, that took some getting through. My head hurts now!

Yes now you come to mention it. My coopers bitter in my barrel has only been in just over two and a half weeks and though not as carbonated, probably my fault, isn't a million miles away from newcy brown. And I've just tonight had a couple of pints of cask double maxim in a pub and it was a bit like that too.

I think the wilko Newkie one with some steeped crystal brewed short would be a good starting point, I the Newkie kit alone lacked the caramel under tones in there.

Christ; As soon as I read that word? The taste rushed back to me!

Perhaps using wherthers originals as carbonation drops would give the desired caramel undertone?

years ago when it had the higher ABV,it was known locally as loonatics broth
Re: Newcy brown clone in kit anyone?
I loved Newcastle Brown when I was a lad (about 16 I think it was....there's not much to do in the Welsh Valleys)
. I have had a few bottles recently and it isn't as "heavy" or flavoursome as it used to be...but it's not bad.

IIRC (we're talking 20+ years ago here) I remember a local no longer stocking NBA and was replaced with something called Arrols 80/- I literally had the t-shirt (collected stamps) I think it was a more meatier beer, don't see it nowadays though, might have better luck trying to hunt a recipe for that.
