Did Thorne Brewery use historic Darley's yeast?

Post by seymour » Fri Sep 19, 2014 5:24 pm

Hello everyone. Do any of you have a connection to the short-lived Thorne Brewery Community Interest Company in Thorne, Doncaster, South Yorks? From what I gather, it was an awesome idea: a Darley's revival and attempt to bring brewing back to benefit the community in many ways. Sadly, it only lasted from 2009-2012; it's really too bad plans didn't work out.

Anyway, they referred to the historic Darley's Brewery in Thorne with beers such as Darley's Ghost, but does anyone know if Thorne Brewery followed actual historic recipes? Did they use the actual Darley's Brewery yeast strain? I can tell from various sources that Darley's Brewing Books still exist, but the National Archives site says they're in a private collection. Would that be Community Interest Company, I wonder? Their website and email addresses are all expired.

Anyway, I'd love to hear any of your thoughts and info.

Cheers!

I've lived in the East Riding of Yorkshire and South Yorkshire area since around 2008.

Now currently live in Doncaster, but looked to live in Thorne at one point. One thing I would say, not that it's particularly relevant, but Thorne is a pretty run-down and deprived area. It's not somewhere I would associate with good beer. At all.

I've sampled two of their beers, both in mid 2010. One beer got 0 out of 5, the other got 3.6 out of 5. They were the 'Best Bitter' and 'Pale Ale' respectively, served at the Corner House in Beverley.

Sorry I can't provide any info about recipes though :(

Though if you need any further info from local archives maybe I could help?
