American style pale ale kit recommendation
American style pale ale kit recommendation
I'm loving a lot of different american pale ale beers atm & wanted to make some but wondered if there was a good kit to get that style or whether I should look at an extract kit like "way to Amarillo"?

Any basic bitter, pale or golden ale kit you like, then dry hop the hell outta it.

Any particular hops?

Sierra Nevada apa's are a good start but Lagunitas IPA is probably the best I've tasted. there seems to be a lot of craft beer of this style in Bristol currently as well as things like punk IPA & dead pony.

Well, brewer's choice as always!ChrisHughes wrote:Any particular hops?

Since you like SNPA, consider Cascade.
Since you like Lagunitas IPA, consider Willamette, Cascade, Centennial.
Since you like Punk IPA, consider Simcoe, Ahtanum, Chinook, Nelson Sauvin, Crystal, Motoeka.
Since you like Dead Pony, consider Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic.
Or, any combination of the above. Read a bit about each, seek out beers containing each, brew tiny stovetop batches with each if need be. You got this. Your next kit is gonna blow people's minds.

Cool, thanks Seymour. What should I use for a base malt wise? Get something like a wilko golden ale & dry hop? Or get some dme & go experimenting with an extract brew?
Also when you say stovetop batches, what volume are we talking? I'm up for some small experiments to get he right beer

Whichever you like. Keep it simple, right? I think the cheapest, best-selling can kit might be ideal, not because it's the best-tasting in it own right, but because the one with the fastest turnover is probably the freshest, and you're just aiming for a nice malty blank slate to showcase your hops. That's just a personal theory, but maybe we're both overthinking it.ChrisHughes wrote:What should I use for a base malt wise? Get something like a wilko golden ale & dry hop? Well, here's something super tiny I've been having fun with: Seymour Tiny Hop Trial and Yeast Starter ProjectChrisHughes wrote:...Also when you say stovetop batches, what volume are we talking? I'm up for some small experiments to get he right beer

Youngs Craft American Pale Ale was superb after 3 months, fantastic head, hoptastic aroma!
Hopping the hell out of a Simply Pale Ale kit (£7.99 on offer from Homebrew Online) with Cascade and Centenniel, having made it up with brew enhancer, also produced a very acceptable and much cheaper result!

Here's a bit of a guide I made, just substitute hops for your desired flavours...

Thanks Hopping_Mad & Geezer. I'll take a look.
Talking of the youngs American pale ale kits what about some of the others like the Bulldog five finger & evil dog?

Bulldog FFJ is pretty good. Just not as good as the Youngs IMHO.
There's a Brewery Classics APA kit I haven't done it, but I'd like to know what it's like?

Re: American style pale ale kit recommendation
I'd personally use a coopers APA as a base!
Re: American style pale ale kit recommendation
Went to the local homebrew store & picked up the bulldog five fingers as that's all they had in & I wanted something convenient until I get confident enough to do my own experiments. Thanks for the tips, bookmarked for the next batch
