Stainless
Hi, Acquired a stainless container, looks like an old keg, it has legs welded on. Inside where the welds show through, its a bit blemished. I would like to convert to a mash tun. If I electric wire brush it to clean up, do you think it will be ok, or is there something I could treat it with that won't leach onto the mash?

no palate, no patience.

Re: Stainless
im no expert buit i think using steel wire brushes will premote the stainless steels ability to rust, using a stainless wire brush shouldnt..
if clean and no carbon deposits you may get away with a barkeepers friend poilish, but if crusted up i think its best practice to wear down and re treat with an acid to repacify the stainless.

Re: Stainless
pickling paste. Apparently it's hideous stuff and needs to be removed afterwards. I've never used it so no idea if you can just rinse it.

Pickling paste, is straight forward to use, paint it on,,,,,, wait,,,,,, & wash off.
Don't paint yourself (skin will go yellow), don't breath in the fumes, just read the instructions / sheets for it.

If the blemish you are describing is like this

then you can clean it up with these and a bit of elbow grease.

Re: Stainless
I find that the black scotchbrite pad is better for stainless the green and marone are better for alloy, there is also an abrasive block manufactured by Garrison which can be sanded to a sharp point if needed to get into tight corners. the Blue one is a good all rounder.

I had a rep in showing a new product last week which was a strip you placed onto the weld left for 15 mins then wiped off with a neutraliser at £40 for a 25mtr roll and £20 for the neutraliser he was soon on his way. I also have what they call tigbrush which uses an electrolyte and ac/dc current depending on application but ye canny beat pickling paste for ease and result,
