Gas Burner Suggestions

Post by Jamie Mullen » Fri Jan 16, 2015 1:28 am

I'm after recommendations for gas burners suitable to heat up my 70ltr pot for BIAB please. I will start off aiming for a 23ltr brew length but once I'm happy with a recipe I will aim to max out the capacity so I need something with some ooomph. I'm trying to keep costs down but I appreciate you get what you pay for.

I have also seen the metal wind breaks that people have to minimise the losses due to the wind blowing while brewing outdoors. Where can they be bought please?

Probably the most potent burners you can get for this size of pot will be a Paella burner like this :

an output of 12kW is pretty hefty, and better than any gas ring or burner I've come across even close to the same price. You will however have to sort out some sort of support frame - the type they come with seem weey too flimsy to support near 80kgs of hopping, rolling, 100 degree wort for my liking. Mind you, building (or having built) a custom frame, the addition of a windbreak will be childs play - some sheet steel formed correctly will be fine

Thanks for the quick reply.

They do sound pretty powerful but you're right about the flimsy looking stands, I wouldn't trust them with holding any weight of boiling water. I'm going to buy a small stainless table for brewing on so would I need a stand of could I just sit the burner on the top?

I've seen these come with small feet so the flaming part won't be in direct contact with the table but as much as I don't want covering in boiling wort, equally I don't want covering in molten stainless steel when the table melts!!

The ad states the burner is suitable for table standing, but as stainless is thermally conductive I'd probably put something like a fire resistant fibre board or tile between the burner and tabletop to prevent heat transfer and a possible suprise burn when you touch the table !#

Dont worry about the table melting tho lol - you'd need to heat it to somewhere in the region of 1,400 degrees C and I dont think your burner is up to that

1400 degrees! Good point well made.

Good idea about the fire resistant board too. This paella burner and insulation looks like a good option to look into further, thank you.
