blichmann beergun

Post by oliver tate » Fri Jan 16, 2015 7:26 pm

I am considering buying a blichmann beer gun so that I can bottle a few pints from cornies to take away when I am not at home.

Are these any good? Anybody got an experience of them?

Thanks

They are great, I have a variety of bottling wands from a Phils Philler, the Beer Gun, and a Pegas Tap. They all do the job, and all pretty successfully . . .They do however all have their quirks, and once you know these they are easy to use.

Yeah they're awesome, I got one 2nd hand, and use it for bottling beers with corn sugar in. (I put the right amount of corn sugar in the keg, and bottle with the beer gun - which works great!)

I have a Pegas tap too, the beauty of this type is having it permanently mounted takes away the hassle of bottling a single bottle for someone to take away. Being able to add a tap means it can also dispense in the usual manner too, the perfect solution.

Does the beer gun force carb on the way into the bottle? Never fully understood it from the videos I've seen.

@orlando - that looks awesome :)

What's a Pegasus tap ? I'm intrigued.
I don't have a kegerator so I have to put my corny into the fridge if i want to bottle with the gun. That's only annoyance for me.

No grumpy. You if you have an already carbonated keg of beer the beer gun let's you fill a bottle with out losing any carbonation.

Pegas, it's Russian. It is actually designed for take away beer in supermarkets/off licences or even bars. The one you see here is now quite an old design. It is designed to take PET bottles so if I want to use a glass one it requires a spacer to ensure the bottle is pushed up close enough to make a seal. I think if you search on here you will even find a video of one in action. The way it works is you use it to gas up the empty bottle with CO2 at the same pressure as the keg so when the beer is dispensed it doesn't foam up because it stays in solution. It's then just a simple task of capping the bottle or screwing a cap on. Best piece of kit I have purchased since getting a brew fridge set up and that is quite a compliment.

Ah, interesting, thanks.. How the hell does that work then? :D Can it be used with yeast carbed beer from a pressure keg?

You leave your keg at pressure at specific temperature to give you X amount of volumes of co2 you require. It takes 1-2 weeks.

I leave mine at 15 PSI @ a controlled 12 degC which gives you around 2 volumes of CO2.

You can force carb it quicker my increasing the pressure and rolling the keg but It's inaccurate.

Google carbonation chart.

Yeah, I understand that, I mean how does it transfer without the beer losing carbonation? Is it just because you pre-fill with co2 and gun it under pressure?

You will loose a little I guess due to the head space in the bottle but nothing you can detect.

The co2 purge is just drives away the oxygen that's all.

Make sure you drop the keg pressure down to a couple of PSI when you fill.....unlike me who had a beer explosion at 15 PSI

I always bottle this way now as you can get the carb levels perfect in every batch and every bottle.
