Re: grain father
I was all set to buy one until I saw the review on here. I was put off by the basket scratching the side of the boiler. I ended up converting my buffalo to recirculating BIAB with a pid controller. Cost me £120 in parts and I can also use the controller for the 3V setup I have for bigger batches.
Re: grain father
Are the scratches that bad?, wish i had the know how to do the same as you cos i just done a biab and the wort was full of crap. Wish i hadnt botherd had stuff blowing all over garden lol ended up rushing and came out with about 15ltr at 1.062 so will have to dilute.ended up cubing because i couldnt be arsed.need something simple
Re: grain father
I don't know how bad they are, but I wasn't willing to spend £700 on something that gets damaged every time you lift and raise the basket.
I was the same as you, had no idea what I was doing. I just followed the guides people on here posted. It's getting its maiden voyage tomorrow,. fortunately I have a garage to brew in.
Think I'll brew a mild.

Re: grain father
Just been looking at review.shame cos it does look decent but shows a bit of poor workmanship.
might have to go back to 3v to get clear wort
hope all goes well with the new kit

Re: grain father
Someone on another forum has already mentioned this but I can help but think that the Grainfather could benefit from a BM clone controller...............

Re: grain father
Got the idea of grain father out my head now it does look good but seems a bit shoddy as i have heard a few problems. Defo savi g for a BM and they have been around for some time now
Re: grain father
They said to me after i reviewed that most of the problems i listed had been fixed for first uk shipment.
They didnt say which some or most of the first users early adopters have had minor issues. They were quick to recall their first batch of chillers that were faulty.
It is a good machine and it works well but tbh it was cheapend by certain things.Inhad half the money saved but i would like to see a mk2 before i lay money down.
I would love a bm even more so the new 10 ltr model but alas it will cost nearly as much as a 20ltr model.
And to brew a 10ltr batch in a 20ltr bm you need a extra malt pipe.Boil can be a tad weak but not pose a problem the taps on bm seem to be crap alot of people complain of leaks and most change.
I guess it goes to show there is no such thing as perfect.
Guess depends on why you want one for me it was a space saver as neither machine will.make you better beer imo.Ive brewed and so have others fantastic beers using nothing more than a biab and pot.
But if i had or get the cash i would still like a bm

Re: grain father
Yes if you own a BM, the first thing to go is normally the tap & WHY THE HELL doesn't a BM come with a hop filter as standard??????

Who supplied you with the kit?,if the problems get sorted it might be a maybe but like you ill probaly wait and see what the next reviews are like.
space isnt an issue as much i just want clear wort. The biab i did 2day was full of crap hen i drained from boiler.suppose if i got biab running 100% i could stay as i am

Re: grain father
Good honest review, the scratching problems sounds like a short job to fix with a file rounding off any sharp metal edges, tho it shouldnt need doing..
the pump sounds a bit dodgy with its requirements for special cleaning products, perhaps a lil brown pump refit??
but all in all a positive review.. the output was clear on target for gravity wort ready to ferment, sounds like it does what its ment to..

I got the chance to review one of the units had it for a few weeks over xmas then had to send on probably to another lucky person.
It was a good chance to really review it.I often think some early reviews may have been the fact that they had spent 600 quid they was going to love it or learn to.
I know what you mean and i have to say wort out the recirc mash was cleae as was it going into the fv.
And ive had some right muddy looking beers pre boil with biab and somewhat after boil.
But when its been in fv and all dropped out and bottled i was amazed how clear a beer can get or rather how cloudy it can start.
Not trying to sway you as spare cash i would jump in.
