How long does your immersion chiller take to get to 23c?

I made a standard 10m coil of 7mm copper tube last week, cooled the wort from 100c to 23c in just under twenty minutes. My water isn't metered so my lawn got watered at the same time.

I keep getting letters from my water company, telling me how much I could save if I switch to a meter. Little do they know that I'm a brewer, and like you have a couple of kids that keep the washing machine in use!

I have an unusual but very handy IC. I boil in two pots simultaneously and have two connected coils for chilling. On one occasion last summer, when the mains water was well up in the teens, I was able to proceed as normal down to about 26C, at which point I steeped one of the coils in an ice bucket while chilling the last few degrees out of each pot in turn with the other coil. Very quick and effective! So much so, that when I move to a 'proper' one-pot-per-tier system I will keep one of these coils in line on the mains supply side, for just that purpose.

I should think that would work very well for shed brewers using a long hose.

I think mine (50lt Thermopot) takes about 1/2hr to get to about 35C then takes about another 1/2hr to drop another 10C.

I know I will have problems in the summer, so I'm planning on running a small coil through an ice bath on the way to the FV to knock it down, but it's still in the planning stages at the mo.

And yeh, Mr water company wants to fit a meter, I like (not) the way they go about it. Ie, you can save money, but if you resist, they then say you will be put on a £800 somthing unmetered tariff. But the funny thing is, they can't fit one. They have to fit 2. As I have two supply's. One being mains the other being from the comunal tank which feeds the bathroom. ( out of date shite system)

Other peeps have had guys round (same sort of flats) they have said it can't be fitted, but I get letters saying if you do not let us fit one you will be put on the £800 somthing tariff. So Mr water comp really is just there to make threats and dosh. So I will let them make all the threats they like. Cos one day I will let them in, so they can find out somthing they really know already. After all they make the rules and pay themselves what ever they like. And I'm just a customer like everybody else.

My neighbour's a keen gardener, and he's metered, so when I go on holiday I let him play with my outside tap....share the love.

daf thats excellent performance for an IC my 10mm coil would take 35-45 mins to drop a 23-25l brew down below 30C..

in rerospect the double coil idea wasnt my best....

Thats why i switched to a straight pipe cfc when building the bigger 100/80/100 set up the prospect of over an hour stood over the bigger kettle stirring wasnt very exciting ..

for efficiency in chilling i think the cfc is hard to beat.. and a straight pipe cfc is also easy to clean and inspect too
my beast nicknamed the flux capacitor or the Stainless steel goat will chill 70l down to pitching temps in less than 20 mins..



one thing tho you dont NEED to drop all the way down to 23 to pitch.. I would chill to circa 30c, get on with the clear n clean up and by the time things were drained and stashed away the beer would be closer to 26-27 which is fine for pitching, as long as the beer cools to temps at the lower range of the yeasts published range overnight it will ferment out cleanly and the slightly warmer pitching temp will just encourage the population to get off to a good start

Don't fancy pitching that high to be honest. I'd rather stick with my no-chill cube which takes it to room temp in a sterile container.

My groundwater is very cold and very powerful. The outlet tap is right outside the kitchen window so loses no coldness from tap to chiller.

And clear and clean out with full liquor mash & one vessel brew takes like 3 minutes....

Used mine for the first time yesterday. 10m of 10mm. Took 10-15 mins. Well happy. My "ice in the sink" method used to take an hour!

Timed mine yesterday - boiling to 25degrees took 15minutes.
