Can i add a tap to my stock pot?

Post by marcarm » Fri May 01, 2015 12:36 pm

I currently maxi BIAB in a 21l stainless steel stock pot that I have. This works out well for me as I get a variable brew length, anything from 23l plus. I was thinking about making myself a boiler but have come to the decision I don't actually need one, I just want one, and would prefer to spend the money on ingredients instead.

What would make life easier would be a tap added to the stock pot. I have looked on screwfix and there seems to be so many different ones. I'm not sure what size I would need or if I require any other fittings as well. I also want to add a hop filter but I think I can work out the length of copper pipe myself, although I'm not sure what size I need for that yet!

I'm not overly diy minded, but I did manage to make a brew fridge which is still workings so as long as I can follow instructions I should be fine!

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what I need to buy to do the job, if it is indeed possible.

Thank you

cheap option is cut a 20mm hole in the side of the pot,put in a "modified" tank connector then a a bit of 15mm pipe through the tank corrector, the end of the pipe outside the pot connects to the tap,the other end inside the pot can then join to a hop filter. The mod to the tank connector is just filling out the inside of the connector to allow a pipe to pass through.

yep the guys above have about covered it, another option with a 20-21mm hole is to use SS 1/2" bsp hex nipples and M20 SS washers and a generouse wrap of PTFE tape
diy soft flexible washers can be cut from silicone baking sheet or cake molds.

as you can see i didnt skimp on the ptfe..

when using SS fittings there is no play like with softer brass you cant just apply more torque (oomph) to turn that extra 1/4 turn to line things up, so screw fittings you will want alligned together and count the revolutions needed to lock them together, lts call that X then wrap with ptfe and do up with X-1 revoultions, and then line up, dont over do it as the tape gets shredded as you turn so turning back wont guarantee a seal.. if you overtighten, you have to undoo rewrap with ptfe and do up again ;)
ist update for months n months..
