120L Boiler - Element Advice?

Post by floydmeddler » Wed May 27, 2015 7:34 am

Hello folks,

I'm upscalling production and just purchased a 120L boiler on Ebay. I'm keeping it all electric as I have my garage rigged up for it. Any suggestions on what elements to go for? I'm a small commercial operation and will be brewing once a week... So... can't have things breaking down - although, I brew weekly at the min and my Tesco elements are still doing me very proud. Tempting to just stick with these!!!

Would 2 of these 3kw elements from Mr Lard be overkill? http://brewbuilder.co.uk/3kw-lwd-elements.html Or maybe one of these and his 2.4kw? http://brewbuilder.co.uk/2-4kw-kettle-elements.html

Cheers!

I think you'll need at least two 3kw elements which is what a friend has in a 100l system.

Cheers Anthony. Has he gone for the Brewbuilder 3KWs?

I'll give you some numbers to give you an idea.

I heated 80L with 2X3kw (brewbuilder) and it raised the temp 1 degree per minute.

He bought it as a working system so I not sure if he knows where they came from. Sorry.

I bought 2x 6kW SS elements for £60 shipped from China

I've put some piccys here
https://www.anfractuosity.com/projects/brewing-system/

They manufacture a large range of elements including 3 phase etc.

I still need to get round to testing them though :(

So it came with those connections made between the element terminals. So I just need to connect neutral to one set, and live to the other.

Something I should of asked for was an earth terminal, but I can either weld a terminal to my vessel near the element I think, or otherwise attach
one to the SS flange.

Thanks Chris.

OK... So now I've stumbled upon this. What do people think? How would an earth come into this? Very inexpensive!!

When using these Chinese 220/230V rated elements in the UK, bear in mind the increased current draw at UK mains voltage.

220V rated element on 240V supply will increase watts by approx. 19%

230V rated element on 240V supply will increase watts by approx. 9%

I was under the impression UK rms voltage is 230V

Edit:

Just been reading

http://coffeetime.wikidot.com/uk-eu-mai ... monisation

Which says the nominal is 230V but it can actually be 240V, confusing heh

I wouldn't necessarily trust that, I've measured 230V on my mains over the past 10 or so years, in 3 different properties around the country... While it can vary, I don't believe it really does that much.
