Polykegs or Cornies, advice for a first timer.

Post by Manngold » Sun Jun 21, 2015 9:52 pm

Hey all,

I am wanting to jump up from pressure barrels and move onto either cornies or polykegs, but can't decide which. I have a couple of questions about each, to help me make my decision.

I normally get through about 5 pints per week. Do polykegs come in a more economical stand point with this?

Do they both require the same equipment?

Do I need CO2 for a polykeg?

If I was to convert a fridge and put taps on it, I know I can hook up a corny, can I do the same
With polykegs?

Thanks

What's a poly keg? Is it a bit like a plastic reusable keg?

Could be wrong here but I think polykegs are very similar to crusader kegs, just plastic. Tbh I'd look at the crusaders instead as they are about the same price but without the sealing issues of cornies. Same extra kit needed though. They're what I'll be getting when I get more space

There are loads of threads and questions already answered, eg this. Just have a search through the dispensing section :)

Thanks guys. I had a read of that Goulders, but it just left me even more unsure of what to do.

What are the sealing issues with the Cornies?

Thanks

Cornies are sealed by the pressure inside pushing against the lid to create the seal. At low pressures that seal can be a bit poor and they can leak.
This is especially a problem if you want to serve beer through a beer engine as you need a really low pressure.

I only use cornies, so I can only speak about these.

The only time I have had issues with sealing them is when the seals get a bit old and go hard. So if you get the softer type orings they last longer.

But I do not use a beer engine so I can't really speak about the very low pressures

Hope this helps

YEs it does. I think, I will probably go down the Corny route. Although I did see a party 9.5 L corny on Ebay with it's own mini gas system for £100. Seems pricey, as I could get close to wo cornies for that sort of dosh.

Thanks all
