Re: Cheap long lead thermometers
Why can't I use k type therma couples that come with the pid. What's special about a pt100
So to get a pid up and running I'd need a pid a probe a box 3 core cable and a plug. No connector blocks no connect this wire here thru this block. Just wrap the leads around the terminals. I'm presuming it's all well labeled ie live neutral earth then separate bits for the probe ?

I'm not sure theres any point personally of using a PID temperature controller if you're using gas for your whole setup.
The idea of the PID temperature controller, is to continuously monitor the temperature of something, in this case presumably the temperature of the mash, and turn the element on or off, according to the PID algorithm, in order to best try to maintain the specified temperature. (To control the mash temp electronically, you'd need the wort to either recirculate through a tube with an element in, that's called RIMS, or recirculate the wort through tubing immersed in a water bath with an element in, which is HERMS).
As you're using gas, you'd be better off with just a temperature probe.

Yea I only want something to watch the temp whilst it's under insulation and maybe just watch to make sure the temp is rising

Re: Cheap long lead thermometers
K types are difficult to calibrate thus the PT100 and a PT100/PID combo can easily be cheaper than a "real thermometer".
A calibrated long lead thermometer could easily cost hundreds.

I use one like this, it works great.sbond10 wrote:Been looking at these

It will litrally be used to plonk in at mash stage (I'm biab)
Then fed thru the insulation and kept outside so I can monitor temp lost.
The main questions would be is there anything cheaper with at least a metre of cable.
and the next question would be do I really one I have glass thermometers and a food probe type one. Should I get to temp mash in measure temp then wrap like buggery(foil lined bubble wrap l, double duvet, heavy couch throw) then monitor temp at end.
Any advice is greatly received

Re: Cheap long lead thermometers
Both the PID's I have display 1 decimal place.
So that's 60.4°C.

Re: Cheap long lead thermometers
Cheers aamcle so as I'm only using it as a temp probe I don't need an ssr just a pid a probe and a 3 amp power lead and a plastic tub ?
