Re: Hlt temp control
An stc is only 10a relay. Unless you make it up to go through another bigger relay, you will need a pid.
But having said this you have not said the size of your heater.

I've got 2 2.4kw kettle elements in atm, the cheap ones , will upgrade after a few brews so want something that keep up with the advancing brew gear

Re: Hlt temp control
So that's 10a per element. Have one manually switched and one via stc. Have the manual switch until 95% there then switch off and allow the stc to take over....

Great idea, now will the temp probe that fits in the elbow work with an stc?

thermowell or thermopocket is the easiest method you can make a reasonably cheap one from 15mm copper tube a 15-10mm reducer and some 10mm tube, probes generally contain the sensor aspect at the tip, so ensuring the probe makes good positive contact with the cap/end plate all is good

to fit into a 1/2" bsp thread use a 15mm comression fitting like
http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Compress ... atch||plid|#
drilled or filed thru to (remove the pipe stop..) to let u push the 15mm tube in the 'wrong' way through..

Re: Hlt temp control
For my HLT, I use an STC-100-like controller that only has one channel and it rated at 30 Amps. I got it from Ebay and fitted it to a water resistant plastic food box. It will only switch once channel, and can be selected to be either heating or cooling, but that is OK for an HLT as you only need heating.
