The main one is the cone size, it CAN be difficult to recover beer lost in the cone space. Usually with larger batchesd it would be full of trub and yeast but in smaller batches this often isnt the case. There are ways round it of course like dip tubes but even then unless you add a little bit of hose to the end to get that bit further in they likely dont go far enough, or suck up yeast when you do a big batch. So in answer to your question, there is a downside or two, but it's no big deal really. If you are thinking of going big, being honest, just do it and remember your kit will turn down to about 50% volume without too much trouble if you want to make smaller batches. Obviously theres a limit, if you buy a 1/200L kit thats still a lot of beer even at half rates!Secla wrote:While there's a topic on conicals I've a quick question !
I'm looking at the ss brewtech ones and they do a 27 litre which is about right for me, however next size up which is double the capacity is only 50 more which would future proof things a little
Are there any downsides to having a under filled conical ?
When you drop the temperature to cold condition, the extra headspace will contract to a greater degree than the beer. This can result in blow off tubes sucking up their solution into the beer.Secla wrote: Are there any downsides to having a under filled conical ?
