Bottling bucket idea

Post by sbond10 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 10:16 am

Whilst bottling on Monday my friend noticed how I was having to tip the bucket to get the last of the beer out. So the question is could you put bottom drain on the bottom of a bottling bucket ? Stick it on a work bench and fill from underneath

You could but would probably duck up the yeast too. Most definetly the bit at the beginning and will probably clog the tap. If you look at conicals they have a racking arm they can adjust to sit above the yeast bed.

The way I do is I have a fermenter and a bottling bucket so yeast wouldn't be an issue I don't think

What's wrong with tipping it?

Seriously, a bottom drain might help you get a bit more beer out, but i have one on my HLT and still get a litre of dead space due to the height of the nut. A dip tube that reaches to the bottom would be more effective. But when it comes to racking or bottling, even if there is yeast I just go for a gentle tip and a block of wood underneath.

Sod the block of wood I use my head balanced very very carefully. I suppose a jerry can could work as well but you can't your hands in for a good scrub

Just wedge a towel at the back. That tips it

I syphon from the fermenter into the bottling bucket and mix in any priming sugar at that point, but there's always the odd lump of yeast or whatever that makes it through the syphon. I'd not really want that in a bottle, so I'm happy to tip the bucket using a block of wood and leave a little beer behind with the stuff I don't want.

If I could guarantee that the beer would be completely clean then I might be tempted by a bottom drain.

Looks like it's more hassle than its worth plus with a tap assembly I don't think you could get much lower and you couldn't tip then
