Brew in a bag with a pot instead of a bag

Anyone on here built a brewing system like this, where the bag is replaced with a pot with the bottom cut out and fitted with some kind of mesh or perforated sheet?

I'm looking to build something similar to the grainfather but am having difficulties in deciding what sized pot I should get to fit inside the 50 litre pot I have.

A 20-25 litre pot should fit inside quite easily but I'm not sure whether this will allow enough room for mashing, based on the dimension I think a 33litre pot with the handles cut off should just about fit inside but not sure if that would leave enough room round the outside of it.

Opinions please.

I made brew in a can, a pot with a mesh bottom but I couldn't get enough flow rate through unless I used a course mesh.

Do you know what size the mesh that gave you a good enough flow rate was?

I don't see what the advantage in having an overflow pipe is, surely if its not flowing back down thru the grain bed then its not extracting any more sugars,
I`d just slow down the flow rate.

17 mesh but it let a lot of bits through, you could try raising the can up a bit so that the wort has some reason to want to flow through the grain bed.

The overflow should stop you running the element dry.

Have a look at http://aussiehomebrewer.com there are a few systems on there that might be of interest.
