Grain Storage

I was thinking of getting a blue barrel to store 25kg of grain in.

Does anyone know what size barrel I need. Will it all fit into a 40l barrel?

There a lot of used ones on eBay that were mango chutney barrels. If I get one if there will all my beer taste of mango or can the taste of mango be cleaned out?

Search for something like this, not sure what size mine is 60 l I think should do you. Cheaper are available.

You can fit crushed 25kg of malt into 60litres of space, you may need to tap it down slightly. 60l fermenters work well, are rodent resistant and have a tight fitting lid.

I use this 60 Litre fermenter to store my grain in. A 25kg sack fits in there perfectly.

fwiw i use 45-50l ex mango barrels, they take a bit of airing to dewhiff before use, and once 2/3rds full a lill kicking helps settle it down tighter and then a lil pour and tap/kick repetitions lets you fill the tub with the last of the sack.. 10 mins to fill not 2

but the wider lid and a cushion also make ideal brew stools for lard arse brewers like me:)

what about two cheap wilko fermenters? £10 each I think and means you won't have to carry all 25kg at once. Sod lugging that around.

You would struggle to get 25kg in 2 25 litre fermenters.

Just plumped for the mango barrels on ebay. £11 delivered can't go wrong. Needed the extra storage

They are also not rodent proof.
If you use the blue barrels in a garage or similar raise them off of the floor with a couple of bits of wood or similar.

Rodents can chew through wood ,metal and concrete so plastics should not be rat proof.
I would still keep then in a cupboard somewhere and off the floor

I was wondering about that, as I needed another 25Kg bag of Maris Otter, and wanted to store it in shelving I've just put up. The 25L lidded fermenters fit nicely, so that was what I looked for. After hunting around I bought three 25L food grade buckets + lids (which seal nicely) for £7.99 each from my local HBS.

With a bit of gentle rocking I managed to fit the full 25 kg contents into two of the buckets, with no space left, but also not pushing up the lids. If you were to leave the sack sealed until getting the grain for your next brew I think you'd have no trouble putting the rest into just two of the buckets.
