Mr Lards thermo well

Post by EccentricDyslexic » Thu Dec 10, 2015 2:11 pm

Hi chaps,

I have a thermowell off mrlard, I just want to check the correct way to install it on the kettle.

Am I right in thinking it should be thermowell and washer on the outside, with silicon oring and nut on the inside?

Ta Peeps.

Every single fitting I've put together when I've had the silicon o-ring on the outside its always leaked a tiny bit. A recessed nut and o-ring on the inside seals easily though.

The nut does have a recess in it, so that's why I was thinking the oring should go there. I agree, normally the oring would go on out side, but to minimise places for bugs to hide, I suspect that's why outing o ring is inside vessel to seal threads and against side of vessel?

I dunno. It's going to be boiled inside the vessel so I don't worry about bugs, but I do know that while both MrLard and Angel Homebrew say to put o-rings on the outside, whenever I do that it's leaked. The o-ring in the recessed nut internally seals first time every time.

The only thing I can think is that they suggest this to avoid distorting the o-ring as you tighten the nut. I've not seen that as a problem myself.

I just tried it, I had to hold the nut and o-ring stationary inside the vessel and turn the thermowell from the outside so as not to shear tear the oring, but it seems to have sealed with a full vessel:-)

With hindsight, I think I prefer malt miller's thermowell as it has no place for bugs to hide- http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=746

mine is through the base of my kettle so the metal is a flat (ish)

stainless back nut and dowty washer on the thermowell form an excellent seal
