When do you get your hops out?

Post by sbond10 » Tue Feb 16, 2016 11:13 am

Planning a brew day tommorow and Thursday will be weighing out the first lot of grains tonight along with the hops for tommorows brew. Then when the first brew is mashing ill weigh out the second lot of grains (around 9am in morn ) just wondering if I should do the hops then or later on. Or even today. What's everyone's take on this. Sadly different hops s, all hops are in freezer at the mo

I don't weigh out the hops until my grains are mashing. Gives me something to do, whilst waiting for the mash to complete.

I weigh all mine out the day before brewing, put them in plastic containers with a lid and put them in the fridge. If there's no room in the fridge, I'll put them back in the freezer. I normally use a marker pen to indicate what the hop is, and the amount.

Having recently bought a vacuum packer I sort out my additions including any dry hops in advance which could be a day/week etc before I plan to brew. I then vacuum pack them and put them back in the freezer until ready to add them. I label the bags clearly as to what addition they are. It is probably overkill but allows me to keep track of my inventory when splitting the additions out from 250g packs to then repack those as well.

Now more online shops are doing custom kits such as get er brewed and the maltmiller it does allow me to order exact amount of pellets which can be good but I love the US/New World hops so tend to buy them up when I can and store longer term as they can get pretty rare at certain points of the year.

Never weigh until I start sparging.

I do a combination of the above three posts, depending on how organised I am. The vacuum packer is a great tool, especially as I have one that will also seal canisters, I can put all hops into labelled paper bags, then put them into a canister and vacuum the whole lot in one go.

Me too. No need to do it any earlier.

I'm shocked how organised some of the previous posters are :|

I have wondered if hops are better to let sit for a while rather than straight from freezer to boil. I know they say there is so little water content but still wonder if they would benefit somehow - e.g. better flavour??? (I'm always wanting to get more out of my hops)

My friends have said with my first brew when I went straight from freezer they didn't get much aroma when handling. But I've noticed over other brews letting um rest before boil let's the aroma become from fraqgrent not sure why tho

Ha! Me too - I've gotten so lax these days that I just reach into the freezer when all's coming to the boil and wang a handful or two of whatever I lay my hands on first, followed by another handful of summat or other just after the ol' protofloc. I'm so laid back I'm virtually horizontal, just couldn't care less these days. Maybe I would if the ale turned out crap but it invariably comes out great. So much for recipes.

Looks like some folk are obsessive to the point of OCD.
I weigh all mine out whilst mashing, they go into little tubs and are placed on the counter in order of addition, the crushed protofloc is sat with any 10 min additions.
Don't overthink it. chill.

During the mash. Helps to pass the time.
