I'm wiring up a new controller and have got myself a 240v Chint indicator lamp which I have wired in downstream of the SSR output so that it comes on when the element does. I am now debugging the panel and the issue is that this lamp glows even when the SSR is not closed. It's a strange one - at first I thought the SSR had failed closed, but then I wired in the temp probe as well just to test it further and what actually happens is that the LED glows when "off", but becomes much brighter when the SSR is activated. The wiring is neutral to the LED (always connected), and live to the SSR output. Is there always some small amount of current that can pass through an SSR, that is enough to illuminate this LED? Or is my SSR on the point of failure? It certainly doesn't turn a kettle element on when not activated.
Any help much appreciated..

SSR leakage is powering the lamp.
In my controller I put a relay in front of the SSR so I could switch off power to it completely while still having the PID active.

Re: 240v LED indicator lamp glowing when "off"
Thanks - the leakage term helped, and I see now that my SSR has 20mA leakage (max) which I guess is enough to (weakly) power this LED. Bugger - but at least it doesn't sound like a failure or a weird wiring snafu. I might just have to leave the "two tone" lamp as a feature
Is anyone here smart enough to know if I could fit a resistor inline between SSR output and LED to render the lamp inoperative at low current?
Edit: actually found a few very similar problems to this one now I know the term to search for. Seems as if - maybe - when I get around to connecting my element as well there will be enough load there to stop my LED from glowing in the off position. Won't be in a position to test that for a little while, but I can live with it if not.

Yes, something to be aware of if you don't isolate the power to/from the SSR.
I have a (very) rough sketch of the wiring for my basic one pid/one element biab build if it's of any help.

Re: 240v LED indicator lamp glowing when "off"
Thanks mate. Mine is very similar, but without the extra relay between SSR and element. I can confirm now that when the element is also plugged into the SSR output, the glow is gone - which is a nice result (panic over). Everything else seems to be working..
