Lager/IPA "hybrid", anyone brewed one?

Post by gobuchul » Mon Mar 28, 2016 2:05 pm

I really enjoy Caesar Augustus IPA/Lager hybrid.

From what I understand, it's basically an IPA recipe with Pilsner malt and then fermented with a lager yeast at a suitable temperature. Followed by a few weeks of lagering.

Is this right?

Anyone tried one?

Any good?

Any recipe suggestions?

I agree lovely beer, i have one planned for the summer, as i can't really be arsed to do a proper lager i was going to use the pseudo-lager recipe (90% lager malt, 10% flaked rice fermented at 16 degC with notty any lager hops in the boil) then dry hop with Citra at low-ish tempretures say 8-10 degC for a couple of weeks.

It's a great summer beer

I had a very fresh one recently, the nose was definitely stronger than the taste so I would certainly heavily dry hop it for a few days before packaging it

I’ve brewed a few of these. Fantastic beer when it works out but there are one or two things to watch out for. Because it’s basically a late hopped, relatively low alcohol lager with lager yeast you need to get the water right. A higher alcohol IPA with lots of crystal or munich and a yeast which fires out esters can hide the faults in a typical IPA but it’s trickier with a lager. It’ll also be a bit hazy so I use clarity ferm to reduce the haze a little (but it’s mostly for my friend who is allergic to gluten).

I make a 5% beer with 95% Pilsner Malt and 5% Carapils. I give it about 15 IBU at 75 min then add about 20g Citra at 5 min. I pitch WLP830 at 18°C and put straight in a fridge at 10°C. Then I leave it about 10 days at 10, up to 18 for a day or two to finish off and I do a light dry hop of about 1.5 g/L Citra.
I lager for at least 3 weeks, but it’ll usually spend a few weeks in the cellar at low temp before drinking. I’ve done it with Saaz/Equinox too but I prefer the Citra version.

On another note. Use lager malt a touch torrified wheat and ferment with MJ10 workhorse. Im doing a similar "beer" but Ive used MJ bohemian lager yeast. Im trying to get a nice light beer type brew for a base for further additions e.g. Elderflower and Tayberry. Yes Im a Wallace bro fan.

Cheers

There's a new "category" being brewed by some people called IPL (India pale lager) that is gaining some popularity.
You can brew your normal IPA with your favorite lager yeast, or use lager malt and noble hops or whatever combination suits you.
I have an IPL recipe in my files that I haven't brewed yet.
I'm just here for the beer.

Discovered this beer a few weeks ago and it's a glorious drop!

Glad this has been posted and I will be sure the attempt a hybrid in the future.
