Biab sparging

Post by Secla » Thu Mar 31, 2016 4:10 pm

I was planning a full volume biab on the weekend. Just to try and simplify and speed up the brew day !
I realise full volume usually yields a lower efficiency and I was considering recirculating the wort and Sparging back over the grain from the same vessel !

I can't find any info on this online, I'm assuming there's a good reason for that ! Will I get a higher efficiency or is there a good reason why people done do it ?

I never bothered sparging when I did BIAB. I did squeeze the bag to within an inch of it's life though. I used to get 70-75% efficiency. I hear dunk sparges help, but I switched to a Grainfather before I got round to testing this.

There was a recent post on Brulosophy.com testing the effect of carrying out a vorlauf on BIAB. He found that recirculating the wort improved efficiency of the mash but didn't make any qualititive difference to the beer in the end.

I do a dunk sparge for 15 mins at 78C. Mainly because I can't fit everything in one vessel. Something like 18-20 litres for the mash and the rest of the water for the sparge. My efficiency is running at an average of just below 80%.
