How does this APA recipe look?
How does this APA recipe look?
OK gents, looking at doing this in the next couple of weeks and want a bit of opinion on it. Do you reckon ahtanum and mosaic will go together ok or will the mosaic drown the ahtanum a bit? Also, thinking of adding a third hop into the mix... maybe some nelson sauvin, but wasn't sure if that would go with the other two or not. Could always use some amarillo again, but people will think I'm addicted to the stuff.!
Oh, I'll be dry-hopping a bit as well, but forgot to add it to the recipe.

Re: How does this APA recipe look?
I've never used Ahtanum, but I've yet to discover a bad hop combination! Or a bad hop even, I'm easily pleased on the hop front. Beer front actually. Maybe people could enlighten me. If a beer goes wrong for me it's usually too much of a malt, or a yeast that doesn't suit my taste, or a process issue. But those days are mostly behind me now, and I never made a beer I really disliked. Of course, some turn out particularly good, where everything comes together really nicely.
I just try things using the hops I buy (whatever takes my fancy when I am ordering) and see what comes, and I see no reason why two good American aroma hops shouldn't provide a good result. The recipe looks good to me.

Re: How does this APA recipe look?
Cheers Clibit. I've actually changed the ratios a little bit so the Ahtanum doesn't get lost. Using it at about 2:1 with the Mosaic and will probably dry-hop with about 20g of the Ahtanum as well. I want this to be the main hop in this brew, but still with some complexity to it. It's about on target for the BU:GU profile for an APA too.

I'm really liking using a big chunk of Vienna as a base malt in my brews at the minute. I'm trying it in this pale to see if I like it as much as I do in a darker beer. Its adding something that I'm not educated enough to recognise yet
By the way, that Centennial brown ale is all gone
Without doubt, one of the nicest beers I've ever drank. Another batch of that is on the cards very soon too.
