I too am lucky, just got 25kg pale crushed malt for £18. This is why struggle with the concept of buying a mill.

A mill isn't about cost, it's about quality of the final beer and the extract you can achieve.

Not for me it isn't. If I could hire/borrow one I would certainly give it a test.
But failing that, I cannot get past thinking "unnecessary step with a small gain"

A bit like saying stainless fermenters add to quality imo.

Whitelabs is no longer my preferred producer of yeast, but had I stuck to using dried and not risked, at a guess, £6 for a first vial of WLP002 years ago, I wonder what might not have learned for the sake of that amount.

The harvest from Wednesday's brew of 40 litres of a 1042 Bitter. How much would that cost to buy?

The yellow/green patch in the border, seen left of the jar of yeast, are the hops (after sparging) from the same brew, ready to be turned in to fertilise the plot for next year's tomatoes.

How long can you keep your reclaimed yeast for?

Commercial advice is to repitch within one week of harvesting, but that rarely happens here, a month being more normal and hasn't caused any problems.

That will likely vary by strain and of course the health of the yeast, but ultimately contamination and other factors will necessitate renewal. That in the picture was from the 13th outing.

I've recovered harvested yeast after longer periods in storage, but the outcome does vary.

If you lived here you would have no choice. You cannot buy crushed malt. Unless you import it from the UK.

Also quite bizarre, crushed and uncrushed are the same price. So really is a tough call, hanging solely on taste of final product.
