1st Batch is on!

Post by The_blue » Fri Nov 11, 2011 4:40 pm

Not panicking..... no not at all! :^o [-o<

Turned out my 30 litre boiler holds 20 litres plus grain just nicely.

Water hit 69c and i added the grain. Temperature went down to 65c so I've bought it back to 66c.

The kitchen within 5 mins smells like a malteaser explosion!

going to mash for 90 mins with a stir at 30 and 60.

Lesson number 1 voile floats. I've bought a square of ebay just to try it out and it was a mare trying to get it to sink. Might look at a couple of clean rocks for next time #-o -Joke!

1st snag!

Boiler boils too well!

Image

Was launching hot wort 5 inches over the top...

Took the silver bubble wrap off and its back to a fast roll.

Image

Took a hydro reading at the start of the boil and its 1039. Its about 1035 now! Might be i had more than clean wort in the trial jar.

I'm back to my 20 litres starting amount.

I keep sparging and topping up to 23l. It makes sence in my head. Sparge water is coming off at about 1015 so i'm still getting goodness.

Quick update for actual stock l is obviously litres, b - bottles. Most of my wine stock is intended for Christmas, consuming and presents as is the d&b and the headcracker. The rest is from a considered drive to produce enough beer that conditioning doesn't just mean clearing

How's it smelling? You got a chiller?

Edit; crossed posts so no chill.

Smelled great at the start. When the bitering hops went in it got a little strange but by 75 mins i could drink it straight out the urn!

Like a sented malt drink.

it's still 70+ degrees on the infra red probe.
