mild kit adaption

Post by timbo41 » Fri May 25, 2012 10:10 am

Morning all knocked this up last night comments appreciated
1 x Geordie Mild kit
1kg raw unrefined cane sugar
350 g blackstrap molasses syrup
150g fine oatmeal 30 min slow rolling boil then liquor into wort(strained)
25g pioneer hops 15min boil, tea into wort then hops "hop bombed " into primary and will stay there until i rack into secondary( i dont know if this achieves anything i just always do it to extract as much flavour as i can)

This was really just using up stuff floating about especially oatmeal. granted not a particularly well used adjunct but i hoped it might help balance out the raw sugar and add a little body. Done this kit in its most simple form before was ok but nothing to write home about
Have first signs of activity this morning kit yeast pitched at about 20c dry :)

Now that sounds pretty good, out of interest, do pubs in the UK still sell mild ?

I remember drinking it years ago, but it's a while (about 18 months) since I was in a boozer in Blighty.

I see it very occasionally on my travels, but mainly UP NORTH. I live in East Anglia and certainly its hard to come by locally unless anyone knows better. Always liked a mild, its an easy drink not too much of a leg wobbler :D

Thought about calling it "Mighty OM ! Mild"
Forgot to mention OG about 1039 but never that accurate to be honest so hopefully around 4.3% region bit stronger than I thought

that bitterness will mellow with age, you need to be patient really.

How did it end up timbo? Just deciding what to go and get from BrewGenie round the corner to mod one of these Geordie Mild kits. Got em from Wilkos half price!

Right, I did it with 500g beer enhancer, a 454g jar of H&B Malt Extract and 200g of granulated sugar added just for the hell of it. Any thoughts?

taste notes from this brew... molasses have nicely mellowed out still a bit astringent but i dont mind that Not the "thickest" brew i have ever had but overall not bad and probably a higher fg than expected. Would cut down on molasses next time though
